Introduction to Kayaking and Paddling Skills

Kayaking Workshop – Hands on Session

Have you always wanted to try kayaking? Or want to improve your paddling skills?
Then this workshop is for you. It will take place prior to the Solar picnic at Proud Lake Recreation Area on Saturday, June 20, 2026. Instruction by Matt Dalton, on getting in and out of your kayak, correct ACA kayak paddling, more efficient turning strokes, stopping, paddling backwards and sideways, tips to avoid tipping over, other safety tips for paddling in Michigan, followed by an optional paddle.

You need to bring your own kayak or rent one for an additional fee with Heavner Canoe Rental at 2775 Garden Rd. in Milford. Please arrive by 9:30 am and call to reserve at 248-685-2379. Mention Solar for a discount on the rental.

The workshop will start promptly at 10:00 am.

You will need a state recreation pass or pay the daily fee. Including the paddle to the dam and back, the workshop will be complete at noon, in time for the start of the Lunch at the Solar Outdoors picnic.

The cost is $18 for the workshop to be paid on Meetup/PayPal.
