Sole Mates is a friendly, diverse, and inclusive community of hiking enthusiasts who love exploring everything from relaxed morning walks to full-day adventures, overnight hikes, backpacking expeditions, and the occasional multi-day base camp getaway.
From the scenic trails of Gauteng and the rugged beauty of the Magaliesberg to hidden gems across neighbouring provinces and the rest of South Africa, we're on a mission to discover the incredible outdoor experiences waiting right on our doorstep—one trail at a time.
Every Sunday brings a new adventure! Our hiking calendar offers a fantastic mix of experiences throughout the month:
- 🥾 First Sunday: Local hike in Pretoria.
- 🥾 Third Sunday: Local hike in Johannesburg.
- ⛰️ Other Sundays: Explore spectacular hiking destinations further afield, discovering some of our region's most beautiful and lesser-known trails.
- 🌄 Once a month: Join us for an exciting overnight hiking weekend, giving you the opportunity to experience even more of our country's incredible landscapes.
We believe variety is the spice of adventure, so we continually seek out new routes and destinations rather than repeating the same trails too often. There's always somewhere new to discover and another memorable experience waiting around the corner.
Whether you're looking to challenge yourself, improve your fitness, make new friends, or simply escape into nature, Sole Mates has something for you. Our hikes are best suited to people with a reasonable level of fitness and some hiking experience, and we warmly welcome members of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.
New to hiking? No problem! We recommend starting with one of our Easy or Moderate local hikes to build your confidence and discover your fitness level. Every event includes a detailed description of the route, distance, and difficulty, so you'll know exactly what to expect before setting out.

I am aware of the dangers of personal injury or death inherent in mountaineering, hiking, scrambling, bouldering, rock climbing and activities incidental thereto to which I may be exposed as a result of my participation in club activities and activities organised by or on behalf of the club and I understand and accept that my participation in any such activities is at my own risk for which I accept all responsibility.
2. I, accordingly, hereby irrevocably waive, relinquish and abandon all claims of any nature whatsoever which I or my guest or guests may have against the Club or any of its members, arising out of participation in club activities and activities organised by or on behalf of the club, for loss or damage to property, personal injury or loss of life, howsoever caused and irrespective of whether the loss or damage occurred as a result of negligence.
3. I agree that the terms and conditions contained herein will remain binding upon me, my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns.

ADMIN / MEMBERSHIP FEES
Membership is valid for the calendar year (1 January – 31 December).
To ensure new members receive fair value, our membership fees are pro-rated throughout the year, so the amount you pay decreases as the year progresses.

• The 2027 Annual Membership applies, giving you membership for the remainder of December and the entire following calendar year.
Membership fees help cover the administration and running of Sole Mates Hiking Group and are non-refundable.

If you are not an Annual Member, an Admin Fee will be due. This fee also applies to any guests.
