Learn TIG Welding Basics

This class is an introduction to TIG welding, focusing on the most common type of metal; mild steel. We will spend some time going over concepts then most of the time hands-on welding, as this is the best way to learn!

This class has a $50 fee for non-SSD members and free if you are a member.

You will start by using a TIG torch to weld without filler metal to get a feel for torch/tungsten height and position as well as power/foot pedal control to get consistent weld puddle size. Next you will practice adding filler metal. This requires more coordination as you'll use one hand to position the torch and the other to add filler metal, while simultaneously controlling amperage/power via the foot pedal. Finally, you will join two pieces of metal together using everything you've learned.

There will be a variety of prepped metal pieces to use for practice in welding various joints such as angle, tee, butt, lapp, etc. When the class is finished you can keep what you weld as proof of your new skills!

Protective gloves and welding helmets will be provided; you are welcome to bring your own if you have them.
