Intro to Marquetry (Wood Veneer)

Details

About the Class:
Marquetry is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns and designs. This hobby can be intimidating to get into and requires patience, but is extremely satisfying once learned. It can be used to make small decorative items such as jewelry, add beautiful details to woodworking projects, and make painting-like images that stand on their own. Marquetry items can make beautiful and meaningful gifts due to the time investment of the maker, and the fine materials that can be used.

This class will focus on knife-cut techniques for making small decorative items that can be done with <$50 in tools and materials. The class will also cover basic techniques for adding other decorative materials such as metals, mother of pearl, and opal. Additional marquetry techniques will be briefly overviewed.

In this class you'll learn the fundamentals of Marquetry, and have a chance to try out simple techniques on practice materials. A $10 donation is requested (but not required), to cover the cost of practice materials, and will allow you to take home some materials to practice with. If enough folks show interest we'll hold a hands-on workshop so folks can create their own marquetry piece at the Makerspace.
