Intro to the Tormach metal CNC
Details
Let's learn how to use the Tormach!
Our makerspace has a Tormach PCNC 440 3-axis mill. In this class we will go all the way from a 3d model to cutting metal.
Time permitting we will get everyone's hands on creating tool paths, post processing gcode, and operating the machine, possibly in pairs or groups depending on attendance.
Classroom portion:
Classroom session where together we will design two operations using the software of your choice. I am most familiar with FreeCAD and Fusion, however if you have other software I can try to help. Come prepared with a laptop, or use one of our loaner laptops if you don't have one.
We'll verify tool paths, talk about speeds and feeds, review best practices, and post process our code together, exporting it to a usb stick for use on the machine.
Shop floor portion:
We'll head out to the shop floor and together get familiar with the machine, discuss tools, tool setting, loading programs, and using the interface. Then, time permitting, everyone will get a chance to operate the machine. I'll be helping everyone to make sure we don't have any mishaps.
What to bring
A laptop (if you have one, if not we have some, but come early if you need one)
Comfortable close toed shoes
Clothing that can get a little dirty and won't get caught on things
A desire to learn =]
Disclaimer
Due to our makerspace policy this class doesn't automatically certify you to use this machine. Once you've taken this class you will still need to schedule with an admin and prove that you can go through all the setup, operation, and shutdown of the machine unassisted.
This class is not required to use the machine, only the certification is, so if you are already comfortable with CNC machines there's no need to take this class. Just reach out on slack to get certified.
The general public is welcome to attend this class, but you would need to become a member to use the machine on your own.
