Details
This walk from Uphill will follow the River Axe out to Brean Down, with the option for a long leisurely lunch and tea or coffee by the coast after 4.5 miles, or to do an additional 1.8 miles (approx) with a 80m climb up and along Brean Down and back. Before we return along the coast and inland back to Uphill past the viewing platform adjacent to the old Church of St Nicholas.
Meeting by the Dolphin Public House we will enter Uphill boat yard, then follow the path along the river past the camp site for just over a mile past a nature reserve. After the second mile well pass over the River Axe and follow the path adjacent to the river to its mouth, at the back of Brean Down. At the 4.5 mile mark, you will have the option of stopping for a long break and enjoying the National Trust Cafe, or climbing up ad along Brean Down to the Napoleonic fort at its end (which is approximately an additional 1.8 miles).
Once reconvened as a group and refuelled, we'll walk along the expansive beach for 1.5 miles before turning inland along Weston Road. Turning off the road by Diamond caravan park will recross the river before following the firm path back to Uphill. There is a gentile climb up the hill as we approach the old St Nic's Church that overlooks the village. Before descending back into Uphill with the opportunity for a post walk beverage.
WEATHER
If bad weather is forecast, the walk will be cancelled the day before.
If the weather is horrendous on the day it will be cancelled on the morning of the walk, by 8:00 am
