Trail Work Crew Sunday July 12, 9AM-Noon Okay, we are going to try this in the age of social distancing. Participants will be expected to bring their own gloves, mask, water, and snacks. Participants should be in good health. We will be providing tools, antiseptic wipes, and instructions. Volunteers will be able to work much more than 6 feet apart and we will be outdoors. As such, we believe this will be a safe, enjoyable, and productive experience; but volunteers will need to make their own calculations. Location: County Maintenance Area off South Orange Avenue We will be continuing work on the Dogwood Trail west of Brookside Drive (which is closed Sunday mornings). This work is strenuous, but rewarding. For ages 15 and above. Wear solid shoes and layers. Again, we will not be providing water and gloves and we will expect people to wear masks if within 10 feet of anybody. For information, contact [masked], or call John Verzani,[masked], or Dennis Percher,[masked]
Runners are invited to register for the eleventh Mayapple Trail Runs to be held on Saturday, October 24th, 2020 in beautiful South Mountain Reservation in Essex County, N.J. The races are organized by the volunteers of the South Mountain Conservancy (SMC) with the support of the Essex County Parks Department. The USA Track and Field sanctioned races provide an informal but supportive trail race environment for runners who are up to the challenge of completing 10 or 20-mile distances, or ultra-marathons of 50 or 100 kilometers (31 and 62 miles). All proceeds support the mission of the Conservancy as a steward and advocate for the park and its public programs (go to www.somocon.org for more information). ****We need volunteers to staff the aid stations during the race. If you want to help out, contact [masked]. For the first time this year, you can run 40 or 50 mile distances, or if you sign up for the 100 km (62 miles) you can run the shorter distances (50K, 40 or 50 miles) and not be designated DNF. Medals, however, will only be given to the winners of the 10 and 20-mile races, and the 50K and 100K races. In addition, Conservancy members can use a code to receive a $5 discount. (E-mail [masked] to get the code.) All proceeds support the mission of the Conservancy as a steward and advocate for the park and its public programs (go to www.somocon.org for more information).
