What we’re about
SoundBio is a non-profit community lab devoted to helping people learn, research and innovate. This meetup group lists SoundBio's workshops, speaker events and ongoing Community Projects.
Community Projects are open to the public and your first event is free. To continue participating in a Community Project, you can become a member, starting at $10 per month.

See all- DNA Damage Detection: MicronucleiSoundBio Lab, Seattle, WA$30.00
Bring along your toothbrush to gently collect your own cheek cells and assess baseline levels of DNA damage! You will prepare slides of your own cheek cells, count your cells under the microscope and observe their nuclei. If a big piece of chromosome has broken off in your cell, occasional micronuclei can be found. Some micronuclei are entirely normal, but too many might mean you should check a doctor!
For this workshop, we have partnered with Rachel Aronoff, an experienced molecular biologist and geneticist visiting us from Hackuarium, another DIY Bio lab located in Switzerland!
All SoundBio Lab members can still receive an additional 50% discount on ticketed events, and membership costs start as low as $10/month, so join today!

Soundbio Lab is excited to launch a new Seminar Series. Seminars occur each month with varying formats (in-person vs virtual). Check each seminar for the event details.
September 2024 Seminar: GMO Science
What is a GMO? At this seminar we will discuss what are GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) and how scientists make them.
This seminar is free and open to the community with a suggested donation of $5 for non-members. Please consider making a donation to support SoundBio Lab's vital work in our community! Link to donation page: https://www.sound.bio/donate

- Lab Skills Course: Microbiology Essentials1100 NE 47th St #103, Seattle, WA$240.00
### Welcome to the Micro-verse!
Microbes play a major role in our everyday lives, from fermented foods to industrial applications to our own microbiomes. In this four-week course, you will learn how to safely handle microbes in the laboratory, isolate a pure bacterial culture from a fermented food, and begin to characterize your bacterium with various techniques. We will also explore how microbes are used as tools in food production, the healthcare industry, and synthetic biology. All ages 12+ are welcome, and no scientific experience is required.
Sessions will be held every Thursday evening from October 3 until October 24, 6:30 to 8:30 pm.### You'll Learn how TO:
- Safely handle bacterial cultures in the laboratory
- Maintain a sterile environment for manipulating microbes
- Isolate pure bacterial strains from a mixed culture
- Use a light microscope to visualize bacterial cells
- Characterize bacteria by cell shape, Gram staining, and behavior on selective
and differential growth media - Discuss broader applications of microbiology
