Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve - Sunol
Details
I’ve been coming to this park every couple of weeks to hike and walk my dog, and I’d love to host a plein air session here with the group.
The space is huge, with beautiful views, a creek/river, and tons of inspiring subject matter for painting. There hasn’t been an entry fee lately, but occasionally it’s around $6–10.
Meeting Location:
We’ll meet near the second parking lot on the left after the headquarters, right in front of the footbridge. There are restrooms and picnic tables directly in front of the bridge.
If you get turned around, just ask anyone where the footbridge is — they'll point you straight to it.
👉 IMPORTANT: Cell reception is terrible in the park. Please take a moment to check the map before you leave.
I’ve posted a marked-up map in the photos section and linked the official park map below.

Schedule:
10:00 AM–12:30 PM – Paint, paint, paint! Join the group or explore on your own wherever inspiration strikes
12:30–1:00 PM – Show & Tell: gather at the picnic tables and share your artwork
1:00 PM – Official end, but some of us usually grab lunch nearby on the way back to San Jose — everyone’s welcome
What to bring:
• Art supplies for your medium (paints, surfaces, brushes, cleaning supplies). Beginners with questions: feel free to comment or DM me on Meetup.
• Easel – If you’re painting, bring one. I have an extra French easel, a Gorilla Painter pochade box, and a tripod I can lend—just leave a comment so I can pack it.
• Outdoor wear – We’ll be outside for ~3 hours. Bring layers, hats, sunscreen, etc.
• Snacks/food/water – There’s usually no food or drink available on site.
• Something to sit on if you prefer a seat while painting.
• Pro tip: Set up in your backyard for 3 hours. If you have everything you need there, you’ll be set for painting with us!
Extra Info:
• We paint in public places — people may stop to admire your work or chat. It can take getting used to, but it often becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of plein air painting. Just be friendly and don’t scare anyone off 😊
• Observe all posted signs (especially “keep off” areas).
• Stay on paths and avoid blocking them.
• Dispose of painting fluids off-site (even dirty watercolor water).
• Pack out all your trash.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
Ken
