Life: What is the true definition? Is it strictly a biological concept?

The webster definition of 'life' is so broad that it would easily allow a replicating robot to be considered alive. It gives no requirement on being an organic/biological entity. Nor does it qualify an entity as conscious, having a subjective experience, or having free will. Instead it just requires an entity to be 'animate' with some form of metabolism and ability to reproduce. Does our intuition or the major religions agree with this? Let's discuss!!
