South Valley Guitar Orchestra

Welcome to the South Valley Guitar Orchestra meetup! We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity organization dedicated to enriching the cultural life of Salt Lake County through classical guitar public educational events and performances. We rehearse weekly as a guitar orchestra under the direction of Musical Director Sergio Frias to practice and learn guitar ensemble music.

Yes, you are invited to participate and learn classical guitar with us! We are open to musicians of all ages and experience levels and are dedicated to artistic growth, collaboration, and meaningful human connection through music. We practice weekly from 3-4:30 pm. at one of the centrally located Salt Lake County Public Libraries convenient to I-15, I-215, and I-80.

Sergio Frías Corona is a classical guitarist, performer, and educator with an active international career. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico and a master’s degree in Mexican Concert Music from the same institution, where he later served as Deputy Director of the Conservatory, Director of the International Guitar Festival, and Head of the Guitar Department. He has studied at the Berklee School of Music and holds a second master’s degree in Guitar Performance at Utah State University, where he teaches in the guitar department and coordinates the Classical Guitar Weekend, featuring masterclasses, competitions, and concerts.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Sergio has performed throughout the United States, Mexico, and Latin America, and his discography includes Cachumbambé, a chamber album for guitar and flute.

His playing is often described as combining refined technique with expressive depth, emphasizing clarity, tone color, and musical storytelling. His students have earned prizes at national and international competitions. Recent performances include appearances as guest soloist with the USU Chamber Orchestra and the Nova Chamber Orchestra as well as a solo recital with Utah Classical Guitar among others.
