We can be better at our jobs if we have a good grasp of basic statistics.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a DBA looking to understand query plan performance, a data warehouse person needing to come up with ETL load time estimates, or an analyst needing to report figures to managers. Statistics can help you all.

If only maths classes hadn’t been so darn boring!

Instead of going all mathsy, we’ll be doing some real-time data capture and taking an intuitive and visual approach through summary statistics right up to understanding how to produce simple predictive models.

By the end of the session, you’ll understand concepts like sampling, error, regression, and outliers – important day-to-day stuff and a great base upon which to build. By the end of the session, you’ll wonder how people could have it made seem so hard for so many years.

20:15 - Kamil Nowinski - Move part of your body to Azure SQL Data Warehouse

Azure is cheaper, Azure is faster, Azure is more secure. Azure... everywhere is Azure. Data is everywhere.
Even if not today, certainly in the future (yes, believe me) you will face a case: how to move my data from on-premise Data Warehouse to Azure.
This session will reveal the ideas how to do that, how to recognise if you are ready, what the best practices are and other important things we should be aware of. I will describe potential issues and give you hints on how to avoid them.
Finally, I will present one tool that can help you in a preparation and also we will see what speed we can achieve during a migration.

Speaker Bios:
Steph Locke - Steph is the founder of a consultancy in the UK. Her talks, blog posts, conferences, and business all have one thing in common – they help people get started with data science. Steph holds the Microsoft MVP award for her community contributions. In her spare time, Steph plays board games with her husband and takes copious pictures of her doggos.

Kamil Nowinski - Blogger, speaker, #sqlfamily member. Data passionate, Data engineer and architect.
Over 13 years of programming and experience with SQL Server databases (since 2000 version) he confirmed by certificates MCITP, MCP, MCTS, MCSA, MCSE Data Platform & Data management & analytics. He worked both as developer and administrator big databases designing systems from the scratch. Passionate about tuning database engines, code transparency and maximising performance database engine.
He ended the work of the architect in a project of building a data warehouse for the Ministry of finance in the e-duty program three years ago.
Currently, he is expanding new horizons as a contractor in the UK market, making troubleshooting, prototyping BI solutions, enhancing existing processes among Microsoft stuff environments, popularizing the DevOps approach and efficient solutions in the cloud.
He loves self-development, automation, explore new technology and share his knowledge with everybody who wants to.
From many years tied with Data Community Poland (former PLSSUG), since 2012 acts as a Member of the Audit Committee. He worked couple years as a volunteer and now as a co-organizer and speaker of the biggest SQL Server conference in Poland (SQLDay).
