This hike will start from Ed R. Levin County Park to Monument Peak and take the loop back to Sandy Wool Lake.

Difficulty: Moderately Strenuous

Distance: 10 miles

Elevation: 2100+ ft

About the Park: Ed R. Levin County Park is one of Santa Clara County's most unique regional park and recreation areas. This 1,541-acre park is a complex trail system consisting of many regional wilderness parks. The park's Monument Peak provides a spectacular view of the valley floor and the San Francisco Bay. Mission Peak’s panorama includes the southern arm of San Francisco Bay and the area from San Jose to Mount Tamalpais. To the north can be seen Mount Diablo, the San Ramon Valley and the Hamilton Range. Coyote Hills Regional Park is visible to the west by the Dumbarton Bridge, and eastward is Sunol Regional Wilderness.

Hike Description: We will start at the trail head behind the dog park at Ed Levin County Park and on to Tularcitos Trail, then go on to Agua Caliente Trail connecting to Monument Peak Trail to Monument Peak. Break right past Monument Peak (hopefully I remember where it is this time), then take the Monument Peak Trail to Calera Creek Trail back to Sandy Wool Lake where we park. Boots required, layered clothing, bring lots of water, lunch, and hat. Poles (for hiking) recommended.

Carpool Details: Highway 85 and Camden or post in the comments if you know of any other spots. Arrange among yourselves.

Directions to Meeting Point: Traveling on either Interstate 680 or 880, take Calaveras Road exit in Milpitas (beware there are two Calaveras Road exits on 680). Drive east towards the foothills along Calaveras Road. The Sandy Wool Lake Area is located north of the Calaveras Road. Take a left turn off Calaveras Road onto Downing Road. Travel north along Downing Road to reach Sandy Wool Lake. Trail head is right by the dog park. Parking is $6.00 (unless they increase it).

There are bathrooms at trail head at Ed R Levin County Park by Sandy Wool Lake.
