Route Description: If you have never ridden along Fernan Lake or climbed up to the saddle, this is a beautiful ride. We’re going to have two groups with two different ride leaders. What we’re calling the “brisk” group will meet at the new BLM Ross Point Recreation Area on Maplewood and the “scenic” group will meet at Vantage Point Brewing. The idea is that – regardless of your pace – this is a ride you should experience. From the point at which Sherman Avenue goes under the I-90 underpass, we ride through Fernan Village, then along the scenic lake for a few miles. Once we enter the Idaho Panhandle National Forest and reach the Fernan Rod and Gun Club, we’ll start the climb. Yes, it’s five miles to the saddle, but just find a comfortable cadence, pace yourself, and you’ll get there. Ride with GPS says there is a 12% section but it’s really a steady 6-8% with a tiny bit at maybe 9%. We’ll continue for another couple of miles at a much easier grade beyond the saddle to a point at which the road starts to go down. That’s where we’ll turn around and enjoy a blissful 7-mile descent.
This is a great training ride for the Cross Washington tour.
Note: Bear in mind that you might get warm climbing up, but may be chilled on the descent, so plan your gear accordingly.
