Fernan Saddle and beyond from Johnson Mill Park Cd’A

Pace: 13-15 on flats, personal pace on climb

Terrain: Paved. The climb to Fernan Saddle is 5 miles at a steady 6-8% grade, then another three miles at 2-3%.

Route Description:
If you have never ridden along Fernan Lake or climbed up to the saddle and beyond, this is a beautiful, albeit challenging, ride. And if you have done it before, you know it’s one you should do at least once a year.

From the start we head into Coeur d’Alene along the North Idaho Centennial Trail through recent high-end developments, pass through the resort and town on quiet streets.

From the point at which Sherman Avenue goes under the I-90 underpass, we ride through Fernan Village, then along the scenic lake for a few miles. Once we enter the Idaho Panhandle National Forest and reach the Fernan Rod and Gun Club, we’ll start the climb. Yes, it’s five miles to the saddle, but find a comfortable cadence, pace yourself, and you’ll get there – the scenery helps. Ride with GPS says there is a 12% section, but there isn’t. It’s a steady 6-8% with a tiny bit at maybe 9%. From the saddle we’ll continue for another few miles at a much easier grade to a point at which the road turns to gravel. Some maps call that section Lost Mines Road and others refer to it as Deception Creek Road.

When we hit dirt, that’s where we’ll turn around and enjoy a well-deserved, blissful descent. We’ll reward ourselves with treats at Bakery by the Lake and enjoy the flat return to the start!

Note: Bear in mind that you might get warm climbing up, but may be chilled on the descent, so plan your gear accordingly.
