ALL THAT'S LEFT OF YOU at the Magic Lantern
Magic Lantern Theatre, 25 W Main Ave, Spokane, WA, USUPDATE 4/14: Thank you for your patience while I waited for the Lantern's schedule to be released. This Friday we'll be seeing ALL THAT'S LEFT OF YOU, a Jordanian drama about a Palestinian family and their harrowing experiences on the West Bank. It was the country's Best International Film submission to this year's Academy Awards. Here is a synopsis and a trailer link:
An epic-scale journey into the depths of the Palestinian plight, masterfully tracing and carefully dissecting a multifactorial and convoluted intergenerational trauma. Starting in medias res, in a setting of pulsating action and anguish that leaves a tormenting question unresolved, we are plunged (and swept) from the get-go into a story of undulating pain and a recurring sense of futility. Divided into four chapters - the surge of violence during the Nakba in 1948; the consolidation of a new status quo in the West Bank in 1978; the outbreak of the First Intifada in 1988; and the filmic present of 2022 - Cherien Dabis's devastating All That's Left of You makes us both witnesses and participants in a fathomless and irreparable loss. Yet Dabis resists the lure of convenient sentimentality, weaving instead a labyrinthine character study, shrouding a series of underground and catastrophic conflicts within the bounds of family. In a meticulously paced yet heart-wrenching finale that imparts a bitter aftertaste of unfinished repatriation and existential uprooting, life and hope emerge as the sole bulwark against inhumanity and dehumanization.
ALL THAT'S LEFT OF YOU trailerThis film is a bit longer--about 2 1/2 hours--so the start time is earlier than normal, at 5:15pm. We'll be going to dinner around 8pm after the screening. Please remember to update your RSVP, and I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions amongst the group.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello, fellow film lovers! Our second Meetup this month will be on Friday, April 17th at the Magic Lantern Theatre. Film details are not finalized yet, but I'll send an update once the Lantern releases its schedule for that weekend. The film should start between 5pm and 6pm, and afterwards we'll have dinner at the Saranac Public House, just steps away from the theater.
Also, as a bonus, we'll be celebrating the return of Kenn Nesbitt to the group. For those of you not aware, he's been in Mexico snowbirding all winter, and will be back in town the week of our gathering. I'm sure he'll have some interesting stories to share with us from his travels.
Please remember to RSVP accordingly, and it's best to select "No" if you intend to watch the movie but not attend dinner. That way the restaurant will have an accurate head count. I look forward to seeing you all next week.8 attendees
