See all- Weekend Bike Trip - TomarSanta Apolónia, Lisboa
Hi Bike Buds! 🚴
#FollowTheCalves 🦵🏻 are heading to Tomar for a weekend of bike fun and beautiful views! Two days of riding, 12-13 October, based out of Tomar. Both rides are loops, starting and ending in Tomar. (There's another group ride 19-20 Oct ending in Tomar, different routes).
This is an intermediate-level road ride, but we ride at a social pace, take time to enjoy the scenery, and regroup often. Further details on distance and elevation gain are listed below. Send us a message on WhatsApp if you're not sure if this is a good event for you. Can you only join for one of the two days? No problem, let us know in the Comment field in your response. A bit of rain, no problem. Torrential rain...we'll adjust!
Itinerary
Saturday 12th October:
- 09:00 meet at Lisbon Santa Apalonia to load bikes into the van.
- Train at 09:30 from Lisbon Santa Apolonia station, arriving at Tomar (you can also get on the train at Lisbon Oriente Station).
- Cycle, 60 - 80k, up to 800 - 1100 meters of elevation gain, depending on the group desire.
- We'll stop for food in the middle of the ride, but please bring breakfast for the train, and snacks for the ride.
- Dinner and overnight in Tomar centre (book your own lodging).
Sunday 20th October:
- Cycle 50 - 70k, 600-800 meters of elevation gain.
- Train from Tomar at 18:11 arriving at Lisbon Santa Apolonia station at 20:00 (can also get off at Lisbon Oriente Station)
- Please note there are two train options leaving Tomar at 18:11. Book the option listed as service "R 4432 | IC 526" which includes one transfer. Do not book the direct "R 4432" service.
- We have rented a van (66 EUR + gas and tolls) to transport the bikes. This will be a shared cost according to use.
Bike hire
- We ride road and gravel bikes.
- We recommend Lisbon Bike Rentals as they have really good quality bikes and are opposite Cais Do Sodre station.
- You can also try Biclas for some cheaper options.
- We advise against electric bikes - they are too heavy to carry and go too slow on the flats.
Train tickets
- At the time of writing, a train ticket (two ways) is 25-30 EUR total.
- Bike tickets sell out FAST, but we'll have a van on this trip to carry extra bikes that don't fit on the train.
- You are responsible for buying your own train ticket. Make sure it's the precise time indicated above and that you are either reserving for a BIKE or have coordinated with the group for the VAN.
- I have recently had better success with the CP website than the App for buying bike train tickets on itineraries that involve a Regional train, but you can also buy tickets in advance in person at a CP ticket kiosk. You cannot reserve bikes on Regional-only itineraries.
- Please message me (Alex) in the Whatsapp group (linked below) for any questions about buying train tickets.
- The point of renting a van for this trip is to permit maximum participation, so sharing this cost should be relatively low amount.
Hotel
- We are staying in Tomar.
- We will discuss among the interested participants to share, book additional accommodation, etc.
- Feel free to book another lodging option in Tomar centro if there is something you prefer.
- Hotel costs will be split between the occupants according to the actual rates/stays.
What to bring
- We'll be renting a van to help transport all the bikes. That also means that we can leave gear in the van during the ride and not have to worry about checking in early to the lodging or stashing bags.
- Breathable clothes (we wear lycra, but that's not obligatory, just handy for pockets)
- Snacks (nuts, protein balls, glucose etc. are small but helpful for tough stretches)
- Do not come without water (preferably 2 bottles) and a helmet!
- Anything you need to stay overnight somewhere.
- An appetite for some ice cream, an adventure and some fun!
Cordial Calves,
Alex and Bike BudsFAQs:
- Do you have WhatsApp group? Yes, join please join here for important logistical updates.
- Do you require any special skills? Yes, see body of invitation.
- What happens if I get a puncture? We recommend bringing a repair kit and a spare inner tube. If you aren't up to speed on fixing flats, we will help you! If none of that works, taxi back to Tomar.
