About us

Welcome to the Standing Quill Writing Group! This is a new small group focused on fresh critique and discussion for writers of fiction. All forms (novel, short story, etc.) and genres are welcome. The goal is to improve our craft and grow together.

Fresh critique is especially useful as it gives you immediate reactions and first impressions to your work as it's read. It also eliminates homework for participants and encourages them to actively participate.

How it works:

  • Meetings are every other week.
  • Bring copies of your manuscript that you would like read and critiqued (up to 2000 words).
  • Attendance slots will be kept small so that everyone can have a chance for their work to be reviewed.
  • The reading phase takes about 10-15 minutes, where each participant reads a copy of the work to themselves and makes critique notes on the provided copies.
  • A 20-minute or less discussion phase follows for the work; here, we share constructive feedback and thoughts.
  • Participants return the marked copies to the author.
  • Repeat for each submission.

Writing Critique Meeting

The Helen Kate Furness Free Library, 100 N. Providence Rd. at Furness Lane, Wallingford, PA, US

We will meet on the library's second floor.
Important: Our Fallback location will be Starbucks less than a mile down the road in case the library closes unexpectedly again. The Starbucks address is 501 E Baltimore Ave, Media, PA 19063

Please note we may not have the library room reserved for every event, so we will just sit outside the room in that case.

Look forward to meeting you and reading your exciting manuscripts!
Please read below for what to prepare and expect.

  • Bring copies of your manuscript that you would like read and critiqued (up to 2000 words). No format restrictions, but please make sure the font and styling are readable.
  • Some might be willing to share, so you can bring copies for the number of attendees at the event, or slightly fewer.
  • Attendance slots will be kept at a limited number so that everyone can have a chance for their work to be reviewed.
  • Non-submitting attendees are also welcome and are expected to give critique and feedback.
  • Printing/Copying services are available at the library for a small fee in case you cannot print at home.

Fresh critique is especially useful as it gives you immediate reactions and first impressions of your work as it's read. It also eliminates homework for participants and encourages them to actively participate.

See you soon!

Note:

  • RSVPed no-shows will be given a chance to attend again. Second RSVPed no-show will remove the participant from the group.
