First Meetup of the Startup Policy Lab is about Crowdfunding!
New regulations went into effect on Monday September 23rd: startups can now use public advertising to seek funding. But there's more, much more, coming down the SEC regulatory pipeline.
Join us as SF goes to DC, sorta. We'll learn what policies are coming into force, which ones are in play, what rules are still being debated, and what it means for the startup community.
Meet leaders actively working in the space, people trying to get involved, those trying to use the new rules to raise money, and those that just want to learn more. Everyone is welcome: policy wonks, aficionados, enthusiasts, and those just interested in this issue.

- Charles Belle. History of the World! No, just the SEC. Charles will provide a brief overview of how the legislation emerged. 70+ years of history in 5 minutes!
Bio: Charles Belle is the Executive Director of the Institute for Innovation Law at UC Hastings, College of the Law. His work focuses on early stage companies and includes a wide variety of subjects that impact them, from privacy to government procurement policies.
- Ken Priore talks Wonk! Ken will translate the legalese of the JOBS Growth Act, the SEC rules, and more into English and talk about what crowdfunding and public advertising actually mean, and where the process is headed.
Ken has a long history with alternative public investment vehicles. Ken was counsel and corporate secretary to MVC Capital, a NYSE listed business development company that launched in 2000 with the goal of democratizing venture capital. More recently Ken worked on a successful California direct public offering for Farm Fresh To You and is active in working with regulators to ensure clear and effective crowdfunding regulation.
- Kevin Laws from Chief Operating Officer at AngelList - Kevin will talk about AngelList's work in crowd funding AND their experience raising money! $24M. Yes Million.
Kevin Laws is the Founder & Board Member, Vast. Before Vast.com, Kevin served as a Principal at PacRim Venture Partners with responsibility for sourcing and evaluating potential software investments. Kevin also worked as a consultant in the Communications, Media & Technology Group at Booz, Allen & Hamilton and as Software Development Manager for Computer Sciences Corporation’s offices in Heidelberg, Germany, where he oversaw Development of several major projects, including one of the first large-scale web-based Intranets in 1993.
