Talks this month

Mack Male (@mastermaq) will talk about Taproot Edmonton, an innovative journalism startup he co-founded with a mission to help the community understand itself better. Taproot publishes a collection of curated updates on local topics as well as long-form original reporting that explores questions from the community. He will talk about the journey and share insights on the lessons he’s learned so far.

Jenni Endicot, Strategic Advisor at the Alberta Digital Innovation Office (DIO) of the Government of Alberta, will share some of the past and upcoming initiatives from the DIO to use technology to curb costs and provide simpler, faster, and better services for citizens.

Darren Boyer will share the story of Lightcatch, a free service that people can use to report trouble and alert others. Within 8 months of starting, they helped recover $1.2 million of stolen goods, including 33 stolen vehicles.

Finally, we will introduce an ongoing list of projects open to BetaCity YEG attendees and developers in Edmonton, which will allow volunteers to pick and choose impactful/interesting projects they can work on. Projects in the past that have been completed include YouCanBenefit, the air quality light art installation, and LinkYEG.
