What we’re about
A small group of geologists, earth science teachers, students and hobbyists organized the SIGS in 1972 to stimulate interest in mineralogy, geology, paleontology, and the lapidary arts. The Society has broad activities designed for everyone from beginners to professionals. These activities include illustrated presentations on a wide range of earth science topics, participation in gem and mineral shows and field trips to available collecting areas, both here and in other states. The informal social environment of the Society holds the interest of all ages from the youngest to the oldest. The general meetings are free and open to all who wish to attend. We are also affiliated with the Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Societies (EFMLS) and the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS). At each meeting, a speaker presents a talk on their specialized field. Some are skilled hobbyists and others well-known professionals, but all of them bring their specialties to us for our enjoyment.

The STATEN ISLAND GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY, INC (SIGS) was organized in 1972 to offer programs to the community on the study of geology and its related Earth Sciences. The aim of the Society is to encourage the collection and preservation of minerals, fossils, and other geological specimens, and the aesthetic appreciation of these specimens. The Society is a nonprofit organization, whose goal is to plan activities for the pleasure and enjoyment of its members. It is assumed that our members will take an active role in the participation of the Society’s programs and activities. The continued existence of this Society is based upon the success of its programs and its members working together. Our yearly activities include ten scheduled meetings on the second Friday of each month, September to June, with interesting lecture programs, field trips, study workshops, visits to museums, rock quarries, and other places of special geological interest and above all, a friendly and pleasant atmosphere.
