Beginner-friendly "Blister in the Sun" #2 climbing at Robinson Bluff

Details

Important note - We are a peer group, not a guiding service! We're just a bunch of amateurs who get together to climb. None of us are qualified to provide proper climbing instruction - that's what guides are for. You'll be responsible for your own safety.

Description: Blister in the Sun #1 went very well, and everyone agreed on Robinson for the next trip, so here it is.

This outing will be well suited for beginners who have not climbed outdoors much (or at all). However, all are welcome, especially if you're self-sufficient, i.e. can lead, clean, and have your own gear. Obviously, it will be hot. The climbs we're doing get afternoon shade, so it won't be too bad.

The Plan: We will meet at Robinson Bluff in the parking lot at 11am, and hit the trail when everyone is signed in and ready. If you haven't been to Robinson before, make sure you give yourself plenty of time so that you don't miss us.More about the crag here, and you can sign up online:

Note that the $10 payment is towards the crag, not to the meetup group. It goes towards their upkeep.

The approach is easy, so you can leave whenever you feel like it. We'll stay there until everyone's done, but will definitely get out before dark.

Weather accommodations: If rain is forecast on the 10th, or the day prior, we will reschedule to a later weekend in August.

What you need to have/bring:

These are the essentials:

Climbing harness
Helmet - bike helmet is OK
Day pack - bring one with some extra room, to carry shared gear
Lots of water and electrolytes - don't forget it's summer
Snacks for the day
Comfortable attire that you'd wear for summer hiking
Hiking shoes or boots

Highly recommended:

Climbing shoes - climbing in anything else is like bowling in cleats
Chalk bag, belay device, and other climbing gear that you have
Rope and draws if you've done this before
Sunscreen and other hot weather necessities
More water than you initially planned on!

We will answer ALL questions from beginners, so ask! Most people have gym experience so they know the basics. If you don't, no biggie.

Some group rules for this event

Safety first! Our meetup group has a superlative safety record, and we intend to keep it that way.

No cleaning anchors or rappelling unless you've done it before multiple times. This would not be a good opportunity to learn or to practice, due to the heat.

No leading unless you already have plenty of outdoors experience. A lot of the Robinson rock is fragile, and not a good place to learn.

Helmets must be worn on the ground whenever anyone is climbing in that area (again, fragile rock)

If you have relevant medical conditions, let the host know in confidence. Alternatively, make sure someone else in the group knows.

And again, ask questions if you have them!
