What we’re about

StrangerChess is a daily chess meetup in Prenzlauerberg welcoming any and all experience levels. No matter if you just watched the Queen's Gambit and want to learn how to play or the last time you played was as a kid or you have been playing regularly for years – join us!

Our regular event is held on the sidewalk in front of the Späti on Schönhauser Allee 174, an open and bustling location where pedestrians bump into us as spectators or even join in on the fun. The atmosphere is casual, and our guests oscillate between chit-chat and fast-paced chess.

DAILY — 7PM TILL MIDNIGHT
Our guests appreciate the ability to drop in whenever because without exception, the event is held every day of the week. Although you can get a ticket beforehand registration is not a requirement. You could simply show up during the hours between 7 pm and midnight and join in on the action.

FRIENDLY — CRASH COURSE AVAILABLE
As someone just starting out, we can pair you with other newcomers, and if you wish, our host can give you a crash course to help you get started with the basics of the game. With players as young as 7 years, our meetup is sure to be beginner-friendly. Attendees are also eager to share their wisdom, discuss strategies, and exchange best practices, creating a supportive and collaborative environment.

OUTDOOR — REGISTRATION NOT REQUIRED
The core philosophy of our event is that anyone can drop in on any day. You never know who to expect, which also means that there is no particular selection for experience levels. It's pretty random. We do get regulars as well as newcomers. Some of them are traveling, and some of them just moved here. But one thing they all have in common: they are kind-hearted individuals with a shared love for chess.

OFFLINE — REAL PIECES, REAL PEOPLE
In a world dominated by screens and digital interactions, the average person spends over 6 hours a day on their devices. Finding ways to take a break from screens is important, and playing offline gives us the opportunity to forge real friendships. Healthy and balanced.
