The Pillar of Stoic Logic - The Socratic Method Part 1

Details

Join us as we continue our deep exploration into the Logic pillar of Stoicism with The Socratic Method - A Pratitioner's Handbook by Ward Farnsworth. This book offers a hands-on guide to dialectical reasoning, helping us refine how we think, speak, and respond to others—a core component of Stoic Logic. Through structured questioning and deliberate thought, we train ourselves to better assess impressions and give assent only when reason permits.
This is the first of four sessions, covering Chapters 1–5.

### Why This Book?

The Stoics taught that Logic sharpens our ability to live rationally and with integrity. It helps us identify misleading impressions, control impulses, and develop intellectual resilience. Farnsworth’s work provides a contemporary gateway into this discipline by focusing on Socratic questioning—a tool for uncovering truth, avoiding rash judgment, and fostering humility.
By integrating these methods, we don't just learn about Stoicism—we live it.

### Structure of the Meetup:

🕐 First Hour – Discussion of the reading (Ch. 1–5)
🕑 Second Hour – Group reflection and a live Socratic exercise based on the challenges below

***

### Exercises and Challenges to Prepare:

1. Socratic Restraint in Daily Life (At-Home Challenge):
For at least one day, choose to practice Socratic questioning when you know you are going to enter a conversation where there may be a disagreement or your views may be challenged. Rather than correcting someone or reacting emotionally, try asking genuine, thoughtful questions to better understand the individual(s). At the end of the day, reflect:

  • Was I able to restrain my impulse to argue?
  • What happened when I asked questions instead?
  • Did it change the dynamic—or my own thinking?

2. The “Controversial Belief” Exercise (Meetup Prep):
Bring to the meetup one deeply held belief or conviction—especially one that might be considered controversial or emotionally charged. This will serve as the basis for our live Socratic dialogue. Be ready to question and be questioned, not to debate, but to examine your own assumptions. The goal is to practice the method in real time and observe its transformative power.

### Connecting to Stoic Thought:

  • Logic: Equips us to evaluate impressions and respond with reason.
  • Physics: Helps us accept nature’s design and our place within it.
  • Ethics: Guides us to act virtuously through reasoned choice.

Together, these pillars form the Stoic path to resilience, peace, and self-mastery.
