The word Euthanasia derives from the Greek for "good death", and it is defined in different ways by different governing bodies. Some define it as the ending of a life to relieve intractable suffering, others define it as a doctor terminating a patient's life at their requested, and some simply define it as assisted suicide. Passive euthanasia (pulling the plug) is legal in many countries but active euthanasia is only legal in a few countries, and only under specific circumstances.

Proponents of euthanasia argue that it is part of a person's right to self-determination and that it can be a humane way to end unbearable suffering. Opponents argue that euthanasia might put us on a slippery slope and that other methods are available such as ending a patient's treatment and prescribing medication for their suffering.
