Afterthoughts: A Philosophical Evening

Details

Admission: $10, paid upon arrival

Join us for an evening where philosophy gets dressed up and goes out. We’re bringing together sharp minds, and lively conversation at one of Montreal’s most beautiful bistro pubs—for a night of fine food, strong drinks, and unexpected ideas. Whether you're here for the laughs, the insights, or the chance to meet fascinating people, this is the place to be. It’s mind over martinis—you Kant afford to miss it.

The Program

Intro Game: Subjectify Me!
Start the evening with a fun twist on speed-friending. You’ll receive a list of philosophical perspectives: consequentialist, rationalist, cynic, stoic, and more. Your mission: mingle and match the labels to fellow guests.

Opening
We'll take a few moments for our host to welcome everyone and introduce the concept of the event.

The Debate
Two teams will square off on a big question of philosophy or politics. Each side will make their case with wit, conviction, and just enough logic to keep things interesting. The debate is short, spirited, and designed to spark ideas—not settle them. Afterward, the floor opens for everyone to join the conversation. Expect lively exchanges, fresh perspectives, and plenty of food for thought.

The debate proposition:
Political or societal problems can be solved with violence.

Rapid Fire Debate
Upon arrival, you’ll jot down a spicy debate topic and your own take on it. Want the glory? Put your name on it and claim the stage to champion your cause. Feeling mysterious? Stay anonymous and watch a brave volunteer argue your point for you. Either way, someone else will jump in with the opposite view and equal time to offer a different perspective.

Open Discussion
The rest of the evening is yours to savour; meeting friends, having thoughtful discussion, and enjoying fine food and drinks.
