Hi everyone! I'd like to call your attention to a new group that was recently started by Tawny. If you'd like to discuss philosophy and politics in the park, then check out her group Philosophy Café • Ideas & Society and join the next event!

Speak your truth! We'll also discuss the consequences and importance of free speech.
Date & Time: Saturday, July 11 • 12:00–1:00 PM
Location: Parc LaFontaine (virtual if it rains; link will be posted here by 11 AM)
Description:
When does speech become harm, and who gets to decide? This salon picks up where our winter Free Speech Salon left off, but this time we're going deeper into the machinery: the platforms that have become our new public square, the quiet self-censorship most of us practice without noticing, and the growing tension between inclusion and open expression. We'll compare how American and Canadian media and platforms draw the line differently, and ask the hard question: does more speech actually fix bad speech, or is that a comforting myth?
Bring a hot take. Bring a take you're afraid to say out loud. That's kind of the point.
Agenda

  1. Speech vs. harm: where is the line, and is there one?
  2. Platforms as the new public square: who moderates the moderators?
  3. Self-censorship and chilling effects: the speech we never hear
  4. Inclusion at the expense of free speech: can both win?
  5. American vs. Canadian media and platform censorship: two countries, two rulebooks
  6. Closing debate: does more speech fix bad speech?
