Joseph Stiglitz on free trade agreements

Details

A notable economist who previously served as an economic advisor to the Clinton administration, Joseph Stiglitz has consistently criticized efforts by the United States and other dominant economic powers to foist free-trade arrangements onto developing nations.

An unrelenting detractor of the ultimately ill-fated Trans-Pacific Partnership, Stiglitz has often emphasized that free trade agreements ultimately undermine the ability to develop nations to protect their own citizens when confronted with the demands of usually US-based multinationals to dismantle all national regulations aimed at protecting domestic industries and local consumers.

In recent years, emerging economic players such as India have attracted fierce criticism by refusing to offer foreign multinationals unimpeded access to their markets. Do you feel that the Stiglitz playbook is something that's worth considering for policymakers in poorer nations?
