Nehru's vision of a socialist India

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of the Indian Republic and envisioned the creation of a socialist economy as the solution to the pervasive poverty of his newly independent country. Given the rise of economic income inequality in India under the current BJP government, it's worth discussing whether Nehru's vision is still relevant.
