World's Largest Operating Steam Locomotive Coming to Philadelphia-July 3rd
Details
On Friday, July 3rd at approximately 9:00 AM, the Union Pacific Big Boy Steam Locomotive will depart from the King of Prussia Railroad Abrams Yard and travel to the Philadelphia Greenwich Yard in South Philadelphia.
The train will travel along the West side of the Schuykill River between KOP and downtown Philadelphia, before crossing the river.
The Union Pacific Big Boy is a colossal class of 4-8-8-4 steam locomotives built in the 1940s by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) exclusively for the Union Pacific Railroad. They were uniquely engineered to haul massive, heavy freight trains over the notoriously steep grades of the Wasatch Mountain range between Utah and Wyoming without needing helper engines.
There are miles of tracks and crossings between KOP and Philadelphia to view this mammoth machine.
This will be a very popular, once in your lifetime event, so bypass the traffic congestion and ride your bike.
I encourage all interested parties to post your own ride to view the Big Boy.
