Details
Motivated hike: Spencer Trail (4.4 mi; 1600’ AEG)(out and back)
EARLY DEPARTURE from Sun Lakes: 6:00 am (to arrive at TH by 10:45 am)
Hike distance: 4.4 miles (1600’ AEG)
Hike Leaders: Diane Alessi & Henry Silberblatt
Hike Description: This trail climbs steeply to a plateau above the steep cliffs of Kayenta and Navajo sandstone that border the north side of Lee’s Ferry, giving excellent views south down the river and northeast across Glen Canyon towards Page and Lake Powell. The path gains 1,600 feet elevation in 2.2 miles, and has some rocky switchbacks (see photos), making it short but strenuous. It will be a good hike after the long car ride, and we should finish in plenty of time to get to the Sleep Inn (45 miles; 55 mins) by late afternoon.
Driving Directions: From Sun Lakes: 300 miles, 4.5 hrs., I-17 to Flagstaff then Rt. 89 north to Bitter Springs, then 89A across the bridge to Marble Canyon and continue on Lee’s Ferry Rd. 5.8 miles to its end where there is a large parking area with restrooms. Park at the gravel parking lot at the end of the paved area where you will see a TH sign. We will meet here at the gravel parking lot (not at the Navajo Bridge Interpretative Center with the rest of the Special Hike groups). The trail is inside the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area; a National Park senior pass or $30 standard 7-day pass per car is required.
