A Gentle Hike in the shade at Fort Cooper State Park in Inverness

Details

Let's take a gentle 3 mile hike through Live Oaks, Sweet Gum and Magnolia, and explore the beauty and history of Fort Cooper State Park.
Trails are mostly flat, unpaved and shaded, there are some uneven surfaces with protruding lime rocks and roots.

This hike can be easily adapted to individual needs by adding or subtracting distance and using different paths.

You can expect to see remnants of 1890's phosphate pits on the path to Coot Marsh.
A tall bat house with allegedly 5000 residents overlooks Lake Holathlakaha. The photo looks exactly like that lake, near a fort. A replica fort wall segment recounts the efforts of Major Mark Anthony Cooper to protect his injured men from attacks while they were waiting for reinforcements.

Fort Cooper State Park entry is located at 3100 Old Floral City Rd in Inverness FL, and has a $3 entry fee.

We will meet at #1 of the two large parking areas, just follow the narrow paved road, about 1/2 mile, passing by several smaller parking spots, eventually you will see a sign leading you to the left.
