🌴Day Hike🐗Upper Hillsborough Wilderness🦌11 Miles + A Linear/Loop Route

Details

This is a very popular trail with most traffic starting from the Chancy rd trail head. The north trail head is much less traveled, a bit more rugged.

This hike is best suited for experienced, well conditioned hikers who are comfortable in a minimally maintained wilderness environment. Our route will take us to the headwaters of the Hillsborough River. We will actually be fording the Hillsborough River in two locations. But it will not be as you may envision.😃 No pets on this hike please.

  • Our hike starts at the CR 54 trailhead. Shortly after we cross the tracks in 1.5 miles, we head off the main trail and hike east/southeast.
  • We'll reach a trestle where we'll encounter a short and very shallow ford of the Hillsborough River. After crossing, we continue generally south/southeasterly.
  • Then take an unmarked fork heading southwest/west and follow it to where we ford the Hillsborough River a second time. It can be ankle to thigh deep. There may be a debris "bridge" available.
  • Leave the trail and head west on Loop Rd to the primitive campsite, where we'll take our break,
  • hike the blue blazed spur back to the yellow blazed main trail, and head back northerly for about 3.5 miles and return to our vehicles.
  • I will update details as they occur.
  • The map with the route highlighted is posted in photos.
