Join us as we explore two of the Hudson Valley’s lesser-known historic sites, Springside and Locust Grove. First, we’ll visit Springside, the country estate of Matthew Vassar, the Poughkeepsie brewer, philanthropist, and founder of Vassar College. Springside is the only landscape of Andrew Jackson Downing, one of the founders of landscape architecture in America, to survive largely intact. The 20 acre tract affords easy walks on a series of former carriage roads.

We’ll then go to Locust Grove, originally the summer home of inventor Samuel F.B. Morse and designed in the Italianate style in 1850 by architect Alexander Jackson Davis. Because group house tours are limited to 8 people, we will not be visiting it on this trip but will instead explore the nearly 200 acres of gardens and woods as well as the five miles of hiking trails.

**Location**: Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

**Length**: About 6 miles in total.

**Level**: Easy to moderate.

**Equipment**: Comfortable walking shoes, lunch, water, hat, sunscreen.

**Reservations/Group Limit**: None.

**Cost**: $5 registration fee and $38.50 for round-trip off-peak Metro-North ticket (less for seniors).

**Meet at**: 8:40 at the information booth at Grand Central Terminal with ticket in hand. Drivers should meet train travelers in the waiting room of the Poughkeepsie Metro North station upon arrival of the train at10:57. Station address is 41 Main St. There is plenty of free parking in the train station parking lot.

**Travel by**: 8:50 Metro-North Hudson Line train to Poughkeepsie, arriving at 10:57, and then by car or Uber to the two sites. We’ll return on 4:51 train arriving in NYC at 6:55.

**Drivers should note when they register how many they can transport.**

**Weather:** Rain cancels; co-leaders will contact registrants on day of outing if they decide to call it off.
