About us
The Sunday Assembly is a secular congregation that celebrates life. Our motto: live better, help often, wonder more. Our mission: to help everyone find and fulfill their full potential. Our vision: a secular congregation in every town, city and village that wants one.
We are here for everyone who wants to:
Live Better. We aim to provide inspiring, thought-provoking and practical ideas that help people to live the lives they want to lead and be the people they want to be.
Help Often. Assemblies are communities of action building lives of purpose, encouraging us all to help anyone who needs it to support each other.
Wonder More. Hearing talks, singing as one, listening to readings and even playing games helps us to connect with each other and the awesome world we live in.
The Sunday Assembly . . .
• Is 100% celebration of life.
• We are born from nothing and go to nothing. Let’s enjoy it together.
• Has no doctrine. We have no set texts so we can make use of wisdom from all sources.
• Has no deity. We don’t do supernatural but we also won’t tell you you’re wrong if you do.
• Is radically inclusive. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their beliefs--this is a place of love that is open and accepting.
• Is free to attend, not-for-profit, and volunteer run. We ask for donations to cover our costs and support our community work.
• Has a community mission. Through our Action Heroes (you!), we will be a force for good.
• Is independent. We do not accept sponsorship or promote outside businesses, organizations, or services.
• Is here to stay. With your involvement, The Sunday Assembly will make the world a better place.
• We won’t tell you how to live, but will try to help you do it as well as you can.
• And remember point 1… The Sunday Assembly is a celebration of the one life we know we have.
What should you expect from a Sunday Assembly event?
Just by being with us you should be energized, revitalized, restored, repaired, refreshed, and recharged. No matter what the subject of the Assembly, it will solace worries, provoke kindness and inject a touch of transcendence into the everyday.
But life can be tough… It is. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, we have moments of weakness or life just isn’t fair. We want The Sunday Assembly to be a house of love and compassion, where, no matter what your situation, you are welcomed, accepted and loved.
Most of all, have fun, be nice, and join in!

July Assembly: Self-Defense for Beginners
141 Viburnum Way, Carrboro, NC, USThis month, we're getting active (and defensive)!
Our own member Lacy will be leading an introduction to self-defense with Krav Maga. She'll discuss basic self-defense principles and techniques and then will do live training, including basic hand strikes, kicks, and choke releases that anyone of any fitness level or ability can use.
Lacy has been practicing Krav Maga since 2011 and has run several seminars like this to help beginners learn the basics of self-defense. She particularly wants to help women and vulnerable people feel confident in protecting themselves and others in unpredictable situations.
From a Sunday Assembly point of view, becoming able to experience the world while feeling safe is a great way to Live Better!
For the activities:
- bring water
- wear workout or loose-fitting clothing
- do not wear bracelets, necklaces, or long earrings (studs are okay)
Any level of participation is welcome. You can watch and learn, fully participate, or just try out the things that you are comfortable doing.
(One last note: while Krav Maga was developed for the IDF, and conversations around Israel and Palestine are very heated, we want to remind you that at Sunday Assembly, we seek out "wisdom from all sources." This self-defense class is focused on safety, not geopolitics!)
Kids welcome!
There's a children's playroom adjacent to the venue's main room, and a small playground just outside. What happens at an Assembly
This assembly is a workshop, but most our standard Assemblies hit these highlights:- Some light conversation with an icebreaker question

SACH Bookclub: "We'll Prescribe You a Cat"
Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, NC, USThis month, we're reading the award-winning Japanese novel We'll Prescribe You a Cat. Its cozy plot follows six people, each given a cat by a dubious doctors office, and their recovery, or discovery, of a better life. Come read for the cat stories, and come chat to share your own stories of human-animal bonds :-)
We'll see you on Tuesday 7/21 at the library!
P.S. As always, support your local booksellers like Flyleaf and Golden Fig!
