For nearly every home across the triangle, there is a blue bin or blue dumpster for recycling. In them, we place our hopes that each piece of trash will instead find a new purpose.

However, what happens after pickup is much messier, especially for the many, many kinds of plastics we put on. What goes on to be useful is as much a story of chemistry as it is about markets and even the price of oil.

Helping us navigate this complex system is our own chair Dr. Sam Anderson, who focused his dissertation on the chemistry of polymers and materials. Not only will he teach us about something he is deeply passionate about, he will help you understand what to expect from your recycling bin and how you can recycle better.

Please join us to learn more about the science behind recycling!

Kids welcome!
There's a children's playroom adjacent to the venue's main room, and a small playground just outside.

What happens at an Assembly
Most Assemblies hit these highlights:

  • Some light conversation with an icebreaker question
  • Our main event
  • Some smaller segments on science, news, and meaningful readings
  • Snacks and chats

Parking at Pacifica
We recommend parking along Hanna St. There is handicapped parking in the small parking lot off the roundabout, with more around the back of the venue.
