Hike the Ridgeline Loop to Barbara's Lake and Picnic at the Nix Nature Center

ABOUT THE HIKE: Starting from the Nix Nature Center, this hike loops through the James Dilley Preserve part of the Laguna Canyon Wilderness Park passing by Barbara's Lake and ending with Brunch Picnic back at the Nix. This is a 3.5 miles advanced beginner hike with an approximate 700 elevation gain/loss. This route tunnels under the 133 to... the Lake Trail... the Blackjack Trail... the Ridge Top Trail... the Edison Trail... the Barbara's Lake Trail passing the lake... and back to the Nix. Most of the elevation gain is on the Blackjack Trail leading to a ridge line with beautiful views of the Laguna Canyon Wilderness and spring fed, 12 acre, Barbara's Lake, the largest natural lake in Orange County.

ABOUT THE PICNIC: We will picnic at the Nix Nature Center, so picnic items will come out of our cars, not backpacks. Please bring food items to share for our potluck. BYOB (beverage).... This is an alcohol restricted area, so we will exercise adult discretion. Rest rooms are available at the Nix Nature Center.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: Dogs are not allowed in this wilderness park area.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From the 405 Freeway, take the 133/Laguna Canyon exit heading toward the ocean. The Nix Nature Center in on the right before reaching the 73 Toll Road. The parking fee at the Nix is $3. The machine accepts one dollar bills and Visa/Master cards, as well as the OC Parks Annual Pass. Parking at the Nix opens at 8 AM. Please plan to car pool and arrive early as parking at the Nix is popular and limited.
