Hike Shady Canyon

ABOUT THE HIKE:

(NOTE: We will start the hike at the Quail Hill Community Center.) Let's get an early start and hike through beautiful Shady Canyon. Join Meetup friends for a fun, morning hike on the beautifully maintained and scenic Shady Canyon Trail in Irvine. This out and back trail provides for a flexible pace that accommodates beginner and experienced hikers alike. The route follows a multi-purpose trail that includes your choice of either paved or hard pack dirt. The trail provides lovely views of the Sand Canyon Reservoir, the Strawberry Farms Golf Course, and the naturally vegetated adjoining hills of Sand Canyon. Our mid hike rest stop is the Turtle Rock Community Park, with rest rooms and drinking fountains, where we will regroup for 5 minutes and return the same route to our trail head parking area.

Distance: 5.6 miles round trip

Elevation gain/loss: approximately 410 feet

Total hiking time: approximately two hours

Level of Difficulty: Advanced Beginner

ADDITIONAL HIKE NOTES: Leashed dogs are welcome on the Shady Canyon Trail. Fewer than 5 hikers will cancel this hike.

AFTER THE HIKE:
There are several reasonably priced restaurants adjacent to the nearby Starbucks within the Quail Hill Shopping Center for those that wish to stay following the hike in a lovely outdoor patio setting.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
The Meetup location is just off the 405 Freeway, take Sand Canyon south and go though the roundabout to Shady Canyon Dr. Driving North on I-405: Take the Sand Canyon Ave exit toward Shady Canyon Dr (0.3 mi), turn left at Sand Canyon Ave (0.4 mi), at the traffic circle, take the exit onto Shady Canyon Dr., and then turn left at the Quail Hill Community Center. Driving South on I-405: Take the Sand Canyon Ave exit toward Shady Canyon Dr (0.3 mi), turn right at Sand Canyon Ave (0.2 mi), at the traffic circle, take the exit onto Shady Canyon Dr., and turn left the Quail Hill Community Center

MEETUP LOCATION: Park at the Quail Hill Community Center. We will meet at the base of the stairs of the community Center.
