Sunshine Social Day Hike Excursion 2/21: Finger Rock-Mount Kimball-Pima Canyon 🥾☀️⛰️
Let’s enjoy a challenging canyon to canyon day hike in the Catalina Mountains! We will be hiking from Finger Rock to Mount Kimball and down Pima Canyon.
The trail I have created is an 11.7 mile loop with 4350 feet of elevation, and will take us approximately 9 hours to complete. It is a point to point, so we will be meeting at Pima Canyon and shuttling to Finger Rock for the start.
Due to the length, difficulty and importance of planning and attendance on this excursion day hike, I will only be accepting group members who have joined previous adventure hikes. If you have not had the chance to join an adventure hike, no worries, you can sign up for one and join the next excursion 👍🏻
We will be taking breaks along the way. The trail from Finger Rock up to Mount Kimball is a scramble in parts, we have done parts of this hike to the Linda Vista Saddle with the group before. The views from Mount Kimball are spectacular. The trail down Pima Canyon is more gradual and longer than the trail up.
Unlike other adventure hikes, we will all be staying together for this hike the entire way. If you have done adventure hikes at Jon’s pace, you will do just fine (I’ll slow down a little and add more breaks due to the length of this hike). Expect to take a half hour break at the top for food, group picture and change of clothes. Please bring at least 3 liters of water.
We will convene at the Pima Canyon trailhead at 5:45 and leave in two cars (Jon and Emily will be driving) towards the Finger Rock trailhead. We will shoot to do introductions at 6:45 and get started as the sun is rising. Lunch and peak break around noon, back to the Pima Canyon parking lot by 4pm. At that point, Jon and Emily will get a ride back to their cars at Finger Rock trailhead by anyone heading back to the east side (please and thank you).
Parking at the trailhead is free, please make sure you time it to arrive at 5:45am. Remember, we are meeting at Pima Canyon and shuttling to Finger Rock, the hike will have you finish back at your car.
Please bring water and sunscreen, hiking poles may be helpful if you’re comfortable with them. Lots of scrambling on the way up, lots of water and snacks needed for this whole day hike.
The weather forecast right now calls for 42 degrees at the start and 60 degrees by the time we finish, quite nice! I recommend layers and a change of shirt and/or socks. This hike is relatively shaded, exposed in some parts.
We will be taking pictures and posting them to our group Facebook page. Thank you for your consent to post by joining our hike 😎
Hope to see you out there!
Thanks,
Jon Powers
