This meetup advertises events in Surrey about history. It promotes meetings of its own and of local history groups, some online, some physical and some hybrid (both online and physical). During the Corona virus crisis we organised the Lockdown Lectures, a series of online talks delivered via Zoom.

16th/17th century firebacks were not just functional, often containing information about the house and family owning it; the audience will learn of the detective work that is sometimes needed to unlock their secrets. Examples can be found in Guildford Museum, Clandon Park and Ham House.

The linguistics behind our town’s name may sound a rather dry topic, but the most likely derivation of Dorking’s name illuminates the the archaeology and historic landscape of our area. Please come along and hear more from Robert, who has published a peer-reviewed paper on the subject

David worked in Surrey local journalism for decades, starting not long after hot-metal printing had been replaced by computers, but, he has many stories of the days of inky hands and hard drinking, right through to today’s mainly online world. His talk will be include vintage photos that show some of the many characters he knew.
