Slavery and abolition in Croydon
Details
Lockdown Lecture number 15. The impacts of slavery on port cities like Bristol and Liverpool have been much in the news lately, but slavery - and its abolition - also impacted parts of the country that rarely make the headlines - such as Croydon.
For example, Croydon’s biggest owner of slaves in 1833 was George Smith …. who was the great-great-grandfather of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who was to become Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
