About us
Surrey Young Walkers (SYW) is a friendly walking and hiking group aimed at people in their 20s-40s, based in and around Surrey. We put on a range of walks, from 3-mile gentle rambles to 20-mile strenuous hikes. We have weekends away, across the UK and abroad. We also have social meet-ups, visits to local landmarks and sights as well as live music venues, pubs and other activities.
Whether you are new to walking or an experienced walker who is looking for a group to walk with, you are more than welcome to join us on any of our walks.
We'd love to see you on any of our upcoming walks - just register for a place at **https://surreyyoungwalkers.org.uk**

Nightjars at Ludshott common (4 miles, Circular)
National Trust Ludshott Common car park, Grayshott, GU26 6JG, GBPlease RSVP at our website (green button) and not here, thanks!
Fancy an evening stroll with a bird that sounds like a tiny motorbike and looks like a flying twig? Then this is the walk for you.
Join us at sunset for a slightly mysterious, mildly magical, and occasionally confusing wander in search of the elusive nightjar. These masterful camouflagers spend most of the day pretending to be bits of wood, then emerge at dusk to zip around like feathery ghosts, making a bizarre “churring” noise that you’ll definitely attempt (badly) to imitate later.
Led by a local resident who will absolutely pretend to know exactly where the nightjars are (no promises), we’ll explore heathland and woodland edges, learning about these quirky birds and the other creatures that come alive when most of us are thinking about snacks and television.
Expect:- Strange sounds in the darkness ✅
- Low-flying birds doing dramatic swoops ✅
- Someone asking “what was that?!” every five minutes ✅
- A mild sense of adventure ✅
What to bring: Sturdy footwear, warm layers, and a torch (bonus points if you don’t shine it directly in everyone’s eyes)
Perfect for nature lovers, curious minds, and anyone who enjoys being slightly unsettled in a wholesome way. Booking is recommended—mainly so we know who to come back for.
Come for the birds… stay because you’re not entirely sure which way the car park is.We've provided an automated estimate of the end time and this will be affected by many factors - please only use as a guide. The description above may also have specific notes on ending details.
