Open to everyone, an inclusive welcoming group to discuss all things books. We may venture out to other activities based on the interest so there is room to grow.
If you like books, like to talk about them and live in Sutton or thereabouts, this is the group for you. We choose the books together so there should be a wide variety.

The Book: Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances. That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program. Suddenly, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space.Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin, who are kind and easygoing even when the stakes are highest; mission specialist Lydia Danes, who has worked too hard to play nice; warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald, who is navigating her own secrets; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer, who can fix any engine and fly any plane.
As the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe.
Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, it all changes in an instant.

Community Event: Sutton Soup
St Nicholas Church, St Nicholas Way, Sutton, GBPlease join us for a local Community/Charity event: Sutton Soup - It's the sociable way of raising money for local good causes.
You come along and pay £5 for a meal of homemade soup and bread. You get to hear four pitches from local people who need funding for a project that benefits the Sutton community. You get to vote for the one you like best. The winner of the vote gets to keep ALL the money we take on the door on the night. That means your £5! By coming together that £5 turns into hundreds of pounds for the winner.

Tickets - You can reserve a ticket here. This is not required but helps them get an estimate of how much soup to make.
Cost: £5 at the door
Food and drink: The £5 gets you delicious soup and bread. It may not be a full meal for some, so eat before if you want a fuller dinner. Drinks can be bought at the venue - Yes, they serve wine and beer in the Church for this event.

The Book: Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer.
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the world for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide, the third in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach Trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition.The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.
They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.
