John spent 23 years at NASA's Johnson Space Center, including roles as Division Chief, Strategic Partnerships Manager, and Space Shuttle flight controller in Mission Control. He pairs that operating experience with an investment banking license and strong finance background. Through KickStage Ventures he now invests in early-stage aerospace and defense companies and works with investors who want technically grounded exposure to the sector.
In this session, he will share insights into the new lunar economy and the emerging market for space resources. For most of the space age, the Moon was a destination rather than an economic engine, but that is changing: launch costs have fallen by more than an order of magnitude, NASA's Artemis program has established a recurring cadence of landers on the lunar surface, and new companies are now building the infrastructure to make this a viable sector of the space economy. John will walk through the landscape and the companies defining it, including a company called Interlune, which is developing lunar harvesting and separation systems for helium-3, an isotope whose terrestrial supply is a shrinking byproduct of nuclear weapons stockpiles even as demand is growing rapidly from quantum computing cryogenics, fusion research, and medical imaging. Interlune was founded by the former President of Blue Origin, who helped grow that company from a small startup into one of the largest private companies in the aerospace industry, along with Blue Origin's former chief architect and Apollo 17 astronaut and geologist Harrison Schmitt. Join us to learn how companies like Interlune are approaching space resources such as helium-3 while building out the infrastructure for the next generation of space explorers.
