About us

I started Swirl Sip Social Wine Circle for anyone who enjoys a good glass of wine but feels a little out of their depth when it comes to actually describing it. This is a relaxed tasting practice group where we get together to slow down, compare notes, and learn how to pick out the things we are smelling and tasting without any pressure to sound like a sommelier. You do not need to know the difference between a Burgundy and a Bordeaux to join us; a curious palate and a willingness to share your honest opinion are all that is required.

Most of our meetups are small enough that everyone can sit around the same table and actually talk. We usually pick a loose theme for the evening, such as comparing a few bottles from the same grape or region, and we take our time swirling, sniffing, and sipping our way through them. I like to keep things conversational, so if you think a wine smells like your grandmother's garden or tastes like a wet sidewalk, that is exactly the kind of observation we want to hear. We often bring along a few simple snacks to keep things balanced and to see how food changes what is in the glass.

I try to keep the cost reasonable by sharing the price of the bottles among whoever attends, and I will always post the details ahead of time so there are no surprises. Whether you are just getting into wine or you have been collecting bottles for years and want a low-key place to practice blind tasting, you are very welcome here. The goal is simply to drink a little less and taste a little more, while meeting a few good people along the way.
