We can meet at the cafe 30 minutes prior to the guided tour.

For this "Stoicism in Practice" event, we will be exploring the principle of PraemeditatioMalorum, or the Premeditation of Adversity. This Stoic practice is the mental rehearsal of potential misfortunes, not to be morbid, but to reduce their shock and to remind ourselves of the preciousness of the present moment.

What better place to practice this than at a cemetery, where we can contemplate the universal truth of our own mortality?

The Experience:
Join us as we participate in a walking tour hosted by the Ryde District Historical Society. We will discover the hidden gems and unique stories of the ordinary people with extraordinary tales who are buried at the Field of Mars Cemetery.

How This Aligns with Stoicism:

  • Contemplating Mortality: Walking among the graves serves as a powerful reminder that our time is finite. This isn't meant to be depressing, but liberating. It encourages us to live a virtuous life now and not take our time for granted.
  • Learning from History: The stories of the people buried here provide real-world examples of adversity. We can learn from their triumphs and their hardships, using their lives as a guide for our own resilience.
  • Appreciating the Present: By meditating on the finality of life, the ultimate goal is to foster a deep sense of gratitude for the health, relationships, and opportunities we have today.
