This is an event that calls for a good representation of atheists in the crowd. The theatre themselves have taken the effort to invite Sydney Atheists along. The Christian organisers are also genuinely seeking dialogue with non-believers on-stage and in the audience.
Peter FitzSimons is an Australian journalist and best-selling author, based in Sydney. He is a former radio presenter and national representative rugby union player. He is outspoken as an atheist and a republican.
This event is described as "a special evening with Peter Fitzsimons, who describes himself as an atheist, to engage in conversation with those who profess no faith". (This appears confused, but essentially refers to a dialogue between the religious & the non-religious)
There will be a Q & A style Panel with Peter Fitzsimons (Sports Writer, Author and Critic of the church), Rev Michael Barnes from the Crows Nest Uniting Church (Moderator) and Fr Tony Smith from the North Sydney Catholic Church.
The audience will have the opportunity to ask Peter Fitzsimons and the Panel questions they may have and to make comments.
The topic for this Forum sprang from what the Irish theologian, Peter Rollins, recently said "The whole religion industry is fuelled by our desire to escape suffering and to avoid a gnawing sense of meaninglessness. And the certainty it offers keeps selling because it is ultimately ineffective in transforming us."
(Peter Rollins has provocative things to say about atheism)
(The event is originated by clergy of the Uniting & Catholic Churches).
THE EVENT IS FREE OF CHARGE
