About us
Managing Type 1 diabetes can feel like a full-time job that nobody else quite understands. If you’re tired of explaining what a "low" feels like, what a CGM alarm sounds like, or why you’re staring at a juice box with intense focus, this group is for you!
The T1D Common Ground group is a casual, monthly walking group for Type 1 diabetic adults and their roommates/spouses/partners. 🩵 Special Note for Solo & Single T1Ds:
Managing Type 1 diabetes while living alone or navigating life without a partner adds an extra layer of bravery—and anxiety. Please know that this group is your built-in safety net. You do not need to bring a plus-one to belong here. The moment you step onto the bridge, we are your partners. We carry extra glucose, we watch out for each other, and we ensure nobody walks alone. Come as you are!
We meet on the first Saturday of every month to get some fresh air, move our bodies, and build a real community.
Whether you want to vent about insurance, swap tech tips, or just walk with people who truly "get it"—while your partner connects with other T1D spouses who get their perspective—you are incredibly welcome here.
What to Expect
- The Vibe: Completely casual, supportive, and low-pressure. All fitness levels and walking paces are welcome.
- The Route: We meet at the iconic Wishbone Bridge (off Pleasant Valley) and do an easy, flat 2-mile walk (1 mile out, 1 mile back) along the beautiful Lady Bird Lake trail. It takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
- The T1D Safety Net: This is a zero-judgment zone. We walk at a conversational pace. If anyone needs to pause to treat a low, check a sensor, or take an insulin correction, the whole group pauses. We’ve got your back!
- No Forced Awkwardness: We start each walk with a quick 10-minute circle-up and a light "Question of the Day" (e.g., “What’s your go-to low snack that won’t melt in the Texas heat?”) to break the ice. Halfway through the walk, we do a quick shuffle so you get a chance to chat with someone new on the way back.
