About us
# Talking Books in Dharamshala
A book club for readers, writers, and people who still believe that books can change the way we see the world.
Talking Books in Dharamshala aims to revive book culture in Dharamshala and foster a lasting reading and writing community in the mountains.
This is a space for avid readers and writers—people who genuinely care about books, want to improve their craft, share what they are learning, and remain curious about what others have to say.
We want to build a book club that is safe, honest, warm, and intimate—a space where conversations can go beyond “Did you like the book?” and into the questions, ideas, emotions, and experiences that books awaken in us.
A place where you can discover a new author, argue passionately about a sentence, share something you've written, find your next favourite book, or simply sit among people who understand why reading matters.
And perhaps, over time, make this little corner of the mountains a safe and healing spot for readers and writers.
## Our First Gathering
📖 Read Your Favourite Lines
22 August 2026
📍 Cafe Terracota, Rakar, Dharamshala
For our first gathering, don't worry about finishing a particular book.
Bring a book you love. Choose a line or passage that has stayed with you. Read it aloud. Tell us why.
That's it.
We'll let the conversation take us wherever the books lead.
## Who Is This Club For?
- Avid readers who always have a book nearby
- Writers who want to read more deeply and sharpen their craft
- People discovering their way back to reading
- Anyone curious about literature, poetry, storytelling, and the written word
- People who enjoy thoughtful conversations with fellow readers and writers
## Club Rules
We want Talking Books in Dharamshala to remain a welcoming, meaningful, and safe space for everyone who becomes part of it. A few things we ask of our members:
-
Come for the books.
This is a reading- and writing-focused community. The club is intended for people with a genuine interest in reading, writing, literature, and meaningful conversations around them. -
Respect personal boundaries.
Please respect the personal space and boundaries of fellow members, both during club gatherings and outside them. -
No unsolicited personal messages.
Please refrain from sending personal or unsolicited messages to other club members unless the other person has indicated that they are comfortable with it. Being part of the same club does not automatically imply consent for personal communication. -
Leave your attitude at the door.
Come with an open mind and a willingness to listen. We can disagree about books, ideas, interpretations, and opinions without disrespecting one another. -
No literary snobbery.
There are no “right” books to read. Classics, contemporary fiction, poetry, philosophy, romance, fantasy, memoirs, graphic novels, non-fiction—your reading choices are your own. We discuss books; we don't judge readers. -
Respect different interpretations.
Two people can read the same sentence and walk away with entirely different meanings. That's part of what makes reading—and talking about books—interesting. -
Disrespect will not be tolerated.
Harassment, discrimination, personal attacks, inappropriate behaviour, intimidation, or disrespect of any kind have no place in this community. -
This is a substance-free space.
Smoking, alcohol, recreational drugs, or other intoxicating substances will not be permitted during club meetings or within the club space. -
Come prepared to participate.
You don't have to be the loudest person in the room. Read, listen, share, question, recommend, or simply engage thoughtfully with the conversation. -
Be curious.
Nobody needs to know everything. Come willing to discover new writers, encounter unfamiliar ideas, change your mind, and learn from one another.
## Pay As You Like
Talking Books in Dharamshala will initially operate on a “Pay As You Like” model while the community finds its feet and grows.
There is no fixed club fee at this stage. Contribute what feels comfortable to you and what you feel the experience is worth.
More than anything, what we want you to bring is your presence, your book, and your curiosity.
***
Serious about books. Kind about people. Curious about everything.
Bring your book. Bring your thoughts. Bring your curiosity.
Let's talk books.
