August's Book: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The ride: We'll head east from the parking lot at the Mirage Restaurant (2284 Gulf to Bay Blvd, Clearwater, FL 33765) to the Duke Energy Trail where we'll ride north to Curlew Road. We will travel a short distance on the sidewalk along Curlew until we reach the Oldsmar Trail on the east side of Lake Tarpon Canal. We will follow the Oldsmar Trail to Mobbly Bayou Beach Park where we will take a break before heading to Philippe Park, then back to the start along the Ream Wilson. The Pinellas Trail North Gap - Lake Tarpon Outfall Canal Bridge is due to open at the end of July. If the bridge opens before this ride, we may just have to check it out. Please check back for route changes as we get closer to Aug. 9.

The Restaurant: After reading The Lion Women of Tehran, we decided to check out the Mirage, a Persian restaurant in Clearwater that serves many of the dishes we vicariously enjoyed while reading last month's novel. The restaurant does not open until 11 a.m., we all want to avoid the blazing August heat, and Outspokin Bicycles is conveniently located across from the Mirage. So, we're riding early and hanging out at Outspokin to drool over the merchandise until the restaurant opens.

Ride distance: about 27 miles
Rolling speed: 12-15 mph
This route is a mix of street and trail riding. We will ride on three trails, bike lanes, bicycle-friendly roads and a sidewalk, briefly. We will be near some busy roadways.
